“The Marco Polo's Journey” is the result of a creative, graphic, and exotic collaboration between Black Corner, and its watch brand “Shadows,” and Anka. Black Corner is a music group and the artistic creation and design label of artist and designer Blyne. This series of four watches celebrates the 700th anniversary of the death of Venetian explorer Marco Polo. How? By celebrating his curiosity, his audacity, his courage, and by retracing his journey, which revealed to the world the secrets of then-unknown Asia.
More than a watch: discover the explorer within
Wearing one of the 4 "The Voyage of Marco Polo" watches, designed by Shadows Black Corner based on Anka's “Calypso” model, is to step into the shoes of the intrepid Venetian and have the audacity to "travel the world", to explore the planet. It is to have the intrepidity to go to the ends of the earth to unearth what is most precious: what resides deep within oneself, and all around oneself. This journey, as spiritual as it is physical, invites the wearer of these pieces to quench their thirst for knowledge, for discoveries, to open their universe to other peoples, to different cultures, languages, traditions, and riches. As Marco Polo's adventures, encounters and explorations have taught us, it is about learning or relearning tolerance, respect, wisdom, in order to be able to share these "treasures".
In the colors of Venice, at the time of the mysteries of Asia
The centerpiece of “The Marco Polo's Journey” collection proudly displays the colors of Venice, the explorer's hometown: blood red and gold. The case and bracelet are draped in the blood red color of the Venetian flag, while the gold of the Doge's City standard creates an elegant contrast, on the bezel and the sunburst and fumé dial. The concept takes on its full dimension at the heart of the dial. Blyne and the Black Corner team replaced the hour markers with glyphs. Each of the 12 glyphs tells the time, but in an Asian language, living or dead, from a country in which Marco Polo lived or visited, or crossed during his journey. The “I” at 1 o'clock pays homage to Latin, the mother tongue of the Venetian hero. The back of the watch features an elegant engraving: a portrait of Marco Polo, a map of his journey to the rising sun, and a Latin quote, unearthed from his writings by Blyne: “Libertas seras temporis et spatii ignorat”: “Freedom ignores the barriers of space and time.” A quote to ponder…
Black Corner: a unique label of its kind…
Created in London by Blyne in 2015, almost 10 years ago to the day, Black Corner is a unique and atypical label. It is both an electro-rock / dark-wave group drawing its inspiration from electro, post-punk, new wave, the original East Coast rap of the 80s and nu metal, and a label of artistic creation and global design. Black Corner creates music and produces its works, available on all digital platforms and on vinyl records. The label designs “Street Couture” clothing, jewelry, accessories, sneakers, everyday objects, works of art, Street Art, books, documentary and fiction films, music videos ... The inspiration of this hyper creative collective: the dystopian, chaotic and often violent beauty of this post-20th century world which is dying and the advent of the next one, in a painful gestation phase ...
