The differential gear double tourbillon is typically powered by a single barrel, with a transmission system using differential gearing to balance the two tourbillons and ensure timekeeping accuracy.
Differential gearing is a type of transmission system primarily found in watches equipped with two or more escapements, such as double balance or double tourbillon watches. Its primary function is to compensate for the differences between two different frequencies. The speeds of the two tourbillons will never be perfectly identical. The frequency difference between them is tiny, sometimes only a tenth of a hertz, almost imperceptible, but it accumulates over time. The faster tourbillon transfers more energy to the transmission system.
The differential gear consists of bevel gears connecting two axles. If the speeds of the two axles are the same, the differential gear remains inactive; however, if they differ, it extracts energy from the faster side and redistributes it to the slower side. Throughout this process, the total amount of energy remains constant, but its distribution changes.
